چکیده

Procedural content generation (PCG) is of great interest to game design and development as it generates game content automatically. Motivated by the recent learning-based PCG framework and other existing PCG works, we propose an alternative approach to online content generation and adaptation in Super Mario Bros (SMB). Unlike most of existing works in SMB, our approach exploits the synergy between rule-based and learning-based methods to produce constructive primitives, quality yet controllable game segments in SMB. As a result, a complete quality game level can be generated online by integrating relevant constructive primitives via controllable parameters regarding geometrical features and procedure-level properties. Also the adaptive content can be generated in real time by dynamically selecting proper constructive primitives via an adaptation criterion, e.g., dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA). Our approach is of several favorable properties in terms of content quality assurance, generation efficiency and controllability. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach can generate controllable yet quality game levels online and adaptable content for DDA in real time.

Patterns and Procedural Content Generation

Procedural content generation and design patterns could potentially be combined in several different ways in game design. This paper discusses how to combine the two, using automatic platform game level design as an example. The paper also present work towards a pattern-based level generator for Super Mario Bros, namely an analysis of the levels of the original Super Mario Bros game into 23 dif...

Evolving Personalized Content for Super Mario Bros Using Grammatical Evolution

Adapting game content to a particular player’s needs and expertise constitutes an important aspect in game design. Most research in this direction has focused on adapting game difficulty to keep the player engaged in the game. Dynamic difficulty adjustment, however, focuses on one aspect of the gameplay experience by adjusting the content to increase or decrease perceived challenge. In this pap...

A comparative evaluation of procedural level generators in the Mario AI framework

Evaluation is an open problem in procedural content generation research. The field is now in a state where there is a glut of content generators, each serving different purposes and using a variety of techniques. It is difficult to understand, quantitatively or qualitatively, what makes one generator different from another in terms of its output. To remedy this, we have conducted a large-scale ...

Toward Game Level Generation from Gameplay Videos

Algorithms that generate computer game content require game design knowledge. We present an approach to automatically learn game design knowledge for level design from gameplay videos. We further demonstrate how the acquired design knowledge can be used to generate sections of game levels. Our approach involves parsing video of people playing a game to detect the appearance of patterns of sprit...

Towards Understanding the Nonverbal Signatures of Engagement in Super Mario Bros

In this paper, we present an approach for predicting users’ level of engagement from nonverbal cues within a game environment. We use a data corpus collected from 28 participants (152 minutes of video recording) playing the popular platform game Super Mario Bros. The richness of the corpus allows extraction of several visual and facial expression features that were utilised as indicators of pla...
